“Sober Living in a halfway house”, sounds like something out of a horror movie. But that is no longer the case in California. The Transcend Healing Living Center, a faith-based community-based organization, offers residential treatment and halfway house living. They are located in Emeryville, California, a city known for its diversity. The mission of The Transcend Healing Living Center is “to equip you with the tools to overcome the burdens of addiction”, so that you can “live a sober life”.
The program run by The Transcend Learning Center is broken into three basic phases: Treatment, Staying sober, and Counseling. The twelve-step programs run by The Transcend Learning Center’s staff helps their residents to overcome chemical dependency. In fact, they call their sober living home program “The Family Room,” which is modeled after the family rooms of families in which all members have known each other all their lives. The goal is to create a warm, secure environment for their residents where people can openly discuss issues and learn coping mechanisms for facing life sober. One of the house rules is “No drugs…Not even marijuana.”
The sober living environment in which residents of The Transcend Learning Center reside is a cheerful, secure environment. The house rules require that no drugs or alcohol may be taken into the facility. The goal of the program is to help individuals develop healthy relationships with their peers. The program is supported by a not for profit organization, The Art Therapy Association. The Arts and Human Development Center of the Transcend Learning Center is funded through a grant from the California State Department of Social Services.
