How to Select a Treatment Provider

When you’re in the midst of a struggle with addiction, trying to find the right treatment provider may seem like an overwhelming task. The good news is that you don’t have to take it on alone. We are here to help you narrow down your options and find a suitable treatment option for your needs. Start with a list of what you’re looking for and questions to ask potential providers, and go from there. Here are a few things that you should look for in a treatment provider:

  • Does the facility have proper accreditation and licensure? Look for accreditation by the Joint Commission or (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) CARF.  Make sure have they have the appropriate state licensure to deliver the treatment that they offer. And look into their history as well, to see if the facility has had any previous violations when it comes to accreditation and licensure. All of this information is publicly available, so be sure to do your research.
  • Does the facility have a track record of success? Do they offer plenty of transparency and in-depth information about their programs? When you call their facility, does their admissions team ask for details about your medical history? This is a sign that they do their job well and want to make sure they’re a match for you. What treatment methods do they use and are those methods backed by science and medical evidence? Read about the methods they use to see how successful their patients have been. Does the facility detail their patients’ outcomes and success rates? Making sure there’s a high success rate can help ensure you’re getting the best treatment.
  • How is treatment paid for? Check if the treatment center is within your insurance network. If it isn’t, ask about the cost of every aspect of the treatment, including travel and testing.
  • Do they offer plenty of information? The more information available on their website, the better. Read about staff bios and their qualifications. See if you can find ratings and reviews, and make sure everything you find seems transparent and trustworthy. If anything feels a little off to you, go with your gut.
  • Keep an eye out for red flags. If the treatment option promises to cure you, say that they have an unreasonably high success rate, or seem to be only focused on taking your money, watch out. If they offer you gifts, free travel, or cash payments for selecting their treatment, it can be a sign that they are engaging in unethical or potentially harmful treatment methods. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
