The Sober Living program in South Florida offers residential long-term or short-term drug rehab, alcoholism, and other alcohol/drug treatment programs for men, women, children and teens. In the past, the only programs of this type existed in halfway houses. The newest name for this sober living program is the Transition transitional housing program. This transitional living program supports persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders. A board certified psychiatrist, a licensed social worker, a licensed therapist and a licensed social worker to administer the program and provide individual support to the clients.
A majority of the men and women in the Sober Living program are in recovery from substance abuse and most of them live on a HUD/HCDA supported premises. They are referred to as the transitional homeless services case managers and serve at-risk families. The majority of the families are non-traditional; however there are some traditional sheltered programs in the Miami area. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Division (SAMHAS) of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is the coordinating agency for the Miami Beach area.
The transitional homeowners’ services area also provides services to families with children in danger of becoming victims of sexual predators, those who are severely mentally ill and/or emotionally disturbed, persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders, and/or those with limited English proficiency. The families in need of the services can be referred to the Crisis Line, an outreach program that coordinates referrals to local providers and community agencies offering supportive housing, short-term and long-term assistance. In addition, the SAMHAS provides data on available supportive services and resources to the families in crisis and directs them to the appropriate providers for service planning and referral.
