Alcohol or drug rehabilitation is the medical process by which individuals with addictions: Eliminate their body completely from the substance they are addicted to and eliminate the body’s need for the substance. The most important step in this process is detoxification; a process that helps individuals rid themselves permanently of the substances they are addicted to and help their bodies recover. Most often, alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers try to administer this treatment through one-on-one therapy sessions. Some rehabs use detoxification programs that involve isolation, group activities, and other therapies to help patients recover from addictions. A number of diseases and disorders may interfere with alcohol and drug rehabilitation, however. Individuals may improve while under treatment if they are aware of these complications beforehand. These complications, however, include: hypertension, chronic pain, seizures, nausea, and extreme anxiety. Individuals who are taking certain medications should also be under the care of a physician while undergoing treatment. For more information about substance abuse and alcoholism, and for guidance on choosing a drug rehabilitation center, contact local drug rehabilitation centers in your area. You can also check the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Web site to find a list of centers and to receive counseling. Another source is the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. There is a variety of treatment options available for those with substance addictions. However, it’s always best to consult a professional before beginning any treatment plan.
